Non-negotiable items for me & the kids...Top things I recommend prioritizing if you are new to holistic health & how to NOT drive yourself insane.
What to do when the internet says you are doing it all wrong π
β This week I was talking with a good friend of mine who also runs a rather large holistic health account about natural parenting (I always run my questions by her before purchasing "natural" products π), and we had a rather candid conversation about perfectionist mindset - stress & criticism.
Her community on instagram is 3 times as large as mine, and there is a certain expectation for her to be "perfect" at all times. Honestly it can drive you completely insane if you let it.....and I can tell you that NO ONE is perfect (even if they let on that they are).
The thing I have mentioned in this newsletter many times is the impact of STRESS on your mitochondrial health. Dr. Martin Picard is the researcher who has shown us that stress alone can downgrade mitochondrial function significantly.
So - there is something to be said about doing your best with your non negotiable items, but then putting more time - effort & energy towards joy - happiness & community instead of working to be perfect.
Today I am going to give a quick list of our non-negotiable items & how we make that work in our house!

The top things we have changed over the last 10 years
Yes - that says 10 years, because I don't want anyone to feel as though they have to do everything overnight (you can't & you will make yourself nuts). This list is purely to provide some resources for people who have asked me to compile a list of things we prioritize, and I don't want you to feel pressured in any way!
Food:
The first thing we changed was our food, and we got rid of the processed foods (even the gluten free goodies - as we noticed behavioral issues with our daughter from "packaged treats").
This was honestly a tough one for me, because when I was a teen I lived on lean cuisine's & often "fended for myself". The treats & packaged foods were a huge part of growing up in the 90's as well - and the "fat free era" π«£
I had a ton of unhealthy habits, but after a major struggle with painful fibroids.....and then after a surgery - having my doctor tell me that they would just keep coming back until she would eventually have to give me a hysterectomy ......I was ready to re-learn everything I knew about food.
We didn't get it perfect - but switching to single ingredient foods & learning to cook meals for everyone was HUGE for all of us, and the fibroids have never returned for me (10 years and counting).
Water:
We switched to Mountain Valley Spring Water delivery (in glass) - about 5 years ago, and when we moved to this house - the glass storage and transportation became an issue with tons of stairs.
βThis pitcher is under $100 & a great place to start if you are brand new.
Laundry & Dishes
Since we eat food daily & wear clothes daily - the detergents we use came next. While there are tons of great DIY recipes out there, I have to be honest with you that I am not a DIY person in this department π, and if I have extra time I would rather get outside for a walk with my kids.
I have tried MANY brands, and have landed on Truly free to be the best value of a "natural product" for us that actually gets the job done without causing skin breakouts for my son - or leaving a residue behind on my dishes.
Both of my kids have sensitive bodies with allergies, and we have tried many many air purifiers over the last decade.
βAir doctor is a good product that we have used for the last 4 years, but I did find the filters to be expensive, so we have recently switched to Jaspr (only one filter to change every 6 months & much more powerful).
Toothpaste
Goodness knows we have all heard about the issues with fluoride & thyroid issues - health issues - pineal gland issues (and more)....so toothpaste was definitely a priority.
I have personally been using the Wellnesse Toothpaste (click here for a special deal for my subscribers), and Risewell - code SARAH for my kids (not the nano technology....we can talk about that another day). I also just bought the Wellnesse kids toothpaste, but don't have a full review ready just yet!
I also oil pull about 20 minutes a day, and LOVE it.
Skincare & Soap
We are pretty plain here, and stick with tallow soap & tallow lotions (this is best for my kids with sensitive skin) - Click here and save with code SARAHK.
NNEMF protection
I started really getting into this topic when I was trying to get pregnant & pregnant, and we made some very significant changes when we moved in 2022 to the new house.

Clothing & Makeup
This is something fairly new to me, and I have been exploring these on a deeper level (honestly I really don't wear makeup other than a little mascara from time to time).
For my son with his sensitive skin, we have only bought organic cotton clothing, and I have been wearing lots of 100% cotton over the last couple years (but I feel like it wears out pretty quickly...so I am still exploring brands).
I did do a poll over on Instagram yesterday and complied a big list of recommendations from my community there. Let me know in the poll below if you would be interested in seeing the list?
