and are a complete disaster for others....Why it's not just bad luck & why so many practitioners are still in the dark ages with their recommendations |
Ever try something your friend swears by - only to feel worse?
It's not just bad luck or timing - there are deeper issues to why diets - supplements - HRT & even things like cold plunging work great for some people and are a disaster for others.
Your friend takes progesterone and starts sleeping like a rock......You try it, and now you’re bloated, anxious, and crying over a stupid cat video.
You take DHEA - hoping it will raise your DHEA & testosterone (like it did for your friend), but you end up with sky high estrogen......what gives!?
Today I want to talk about why the same input & dosing - whether it’s a supplement, a hormone, or a medication - can produce radically different effects depending on your genetic blueprint, your circadian rhythm, and the state of your mitochondria.

Since I started studying alternative health almost 17 years ago - following a medical injury to my daughter - I've seen a lot of trends come and go.
When it comes to genetics & genetic testing - I've always thought it was interesting, but parts of it just didn't resonate with me:
I've seen a lot of people obsessing over one SNP at a time, chasing methylation protocols based on MTHFR, or spending hundreds on supplement stacks just because they had one CYP variant.
It has really felt like another version of the same game:
Outsource your power.
Buy more supplements.
Blame yourself when it doesn’t work.
And honestly - when I was going through my fertility journey I spent $7,000 (we cashed out retirement money 😓) on a genetic test & consultation - only to be told I would have to spend $1,500 a month on private label supplements that would need to be taken indefinitely.
(And the ironic thing is that to sucessfully get pregnant in the end - it was getting rid of almost all the "genetic" supplements & doing the protocols I outline in my Leptin Reset with light - deuterium - nutrition - hydration & cold.....which cost me next to nothing).
And when you look at all the information objectively - your genes aren't necessarily the biggest factor running the show.
Over 50% of your genes are regulated by the timing of light, food, movement, and sleep.....which is why I had to (and I encourage all my students and clients to) get these foundations down SOLID - before tinkering about with supplement protocols.
What actually determines whether a supplement works (or backfires):
Let’s take glutathione as an example (I see this a lot in the wellness space).....It’s a master antioxidant, and it supports detox, protects mitochondria, and can help regulate immune function.
But here’s the thing:
If your glutathione recycling pathway (via genes like GSR, GST, NQO1, or SOD2) is impaired…
If your Nrf2 signaling is downregulated because of poor circadian inputs…If your redox state is already overly reduced due to stress - low EZ - high deuterium - poor diet or poor sleep…
Then taking glutathione externally can actually cause symptoms.
It creates redox imbalance - and your mitochondria feel the strain.
Same thing goes for hormones.
Estrogen works beautifully for some women - improving sleep, skin, mood, and cognition.
But if you have sluggish phase 1 detox (CYP1A1/1B1), poor COMT function, or impaired glucuronidation…
Then adding estrogen can create a backlog of reactive estrogen metabolites that are far more inflammatory than estrogen itself.....and could potentially increase cancer risk if detox is not well supported.
I finally came around to looking at genetic testing a bit differently when I realized a couple things:
- Genetics don't tell you what will indefinitely happen.
They you what systems potentially need more support (especially as we head towards midlife & mitochondria slow down) - and how to do that intelligently.
2. Genes alone don’t explain why something works.
You also have to layer in:
- Your circadian rhythm
- Your mitochondrial capacity
- Your redox state
- Your detox bandwidth & cellular hyration/EZ
- Your light environment & sunlight exposure
- HPA axis support
- Factors like deuterium
That’s when you start to understand why one woman thrives on progesterone, and another develops insomnia.
Why one person feels amazing on glutathione - and someone else crashes.
Tomorrow night at 8:30 PM ET, I’m hosting a free webinar with Kash Khan where I’ll break it all down:
🧬 Decode Your DNA: How Your Genes Influence Energy, Hormones & Healing (replay will be sent to those who can't attend live if you sign up)
We will walk you through the real reason your protocols might not be working - even if you’re doing everything “right.” (especially in midlife)
