New Research Shows UV Light Increases Food Intake - But Prevents Fat Gain
I hope you are having a good week far! I wanted to share this study with you as I thought it could brighten your week 🌞😉.
We’ve been taught for decades that weight loss is all about “calories in vs. calories out.”
But what if your light environment mattered AS MUCH as your macros?

A 2024 study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology just flipped the script on everything we thought we knew about fat loss.
Here’s what they found:
- Mice exposed to daily UV light ate more food - but didn’t gain weight.
- Even on a high-fat diet, UV-irradiated mice burned more fat than the control group.
- Why? UV exposure increased norepinephrine, a hormone that stimulates brown fat thermogenesis - your body’s ability to convert stored fat into heat.
- It also suppressed leptin, which increases appetite - but in this case, the body burned off the extra energy instead of storing it.
What's the mechanism? UV light activates α-MSH, increases norepinephrine, improves insulin sensitivity, and helps brown white fat - which is metabolically active and burns energy even at rest.
Modern humans?
We’re living under artificial light, wearing sunscreen, and wondering why no amount of dieting works. (click here for my most recent article on melanin & metabolism to read more & click here to read my most recent article on sunscreen for more nuance on that topic)
Here’s the bottom line:
Your body doesn’t just eat food.
It thrives on light, frequency, magnetism and rhythm.
If you’re trying to lose weight in a fluorescent-lit gym, on a restrictive diet, with a metabolism stuck in artificial time…..you can still make progress - but you aren't giving your body ALL the support it needs (and you will likely stall out sooner).
This video is my favorite short explanation of how to do get safe sun exposure.
And do have to mention that for best results - you DO need to pay attention to what's on the end of your fork....but SUNLIGHT could make things a bit easier at the end of the day due to the benefits for your metabolism!
