(and what I wish I had known sooner). Why do we see more people with histamine issues on elimination diets?
Why is histamine becoming such an issue for people?
Today is a shorter email where I will share some thoughts on why I believe I experienced histamine issues after one solid year on an elimination diet (and what I did about it) - as well as why I am seeing a huge huge increase in histamine issues over the last year in my client & community population.

In 2019 & 2020, I thought I was doing everything right.
I was following a βcleanβ elimination diet to reduce inflammation & get rid of my gut & skin issues. No gluten, no dairy, no nightshades, no sugar.....nothing but meat & eggs. My meals were repetitive but βsafe.β
And for a little while (almost exactly one year)β¦ I felt better. The constant bloating was gone - my skin cleared up, and my mental health had never been better.
But then things took a weird turn in spring of 2020.
Suddenly, I started reacting to everything. My face would flush after eating. My heart raced after bone broth. Egg whites started giving me headaches. Leftovers made me itchy.
I didnβt understand it then, but I had developed histamine intolerance β a problem I now see ALL the time in women & men who have over-restricted their diets without supporting the foundational systems that run the body: circadian rhythm, light, mitochondria, and the nervous system.
Hereβs what happened to me:
I had low DAO enzyme production, because my gut wasnβt getting the light cues or nutrients needed to function properly.
I had poor redox and low metabolic flexibility, so my body couldnβt βclearβ histamine efficiently.
And worst of all? I had convinced myself that healing meant eliminating more foods β not rebuilding my resilience.
Dr. Becky taught me that I didnβt need more restriction. I needed real support for my liver & my gut. I needed more DAO rich foods in the meantime & to understand histamine triggers beyond food.
Within a few months of implementing her work - I was able to tolerate more foods & the histamine issues were gone!
