What the heck is haplotype & why does it matter when it comes to diet? Mitochondrial Haplotype is essentially is a group of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that traces back to a single common ancestor and the area in the World where they originated from (see map above).
Northern haplotypes are almost always loosely coupled (which essentially means that they can be less efficient - but respond better to cold - darkness & scarcity by making heat & EZ water), and Southern haplotypes are tightly coupled & more efficient, but not very good at producing lots of heat.
If your mother's ancestral line traces back to a northern latitude, you are likely a northern haplotype & if your mother's ancestral line traces back to a southern latitude - you are most likely a southern haplotype.
To know for sure: #1 - Do your family lineage research - or #2 Utilize a company like 123and me (I did this 20 years ago before I knew my data was going to be sold....so proceed at your own risk here ๐๐ซฃ).
What does this mean for diet & how someone would approach things like cold therapy - keto & fasting?
If you are a southern haplotype - things like keto - cold therapy & fasting will be more difficult to adapt to (it doesn't mean they shouldn't be done - it's just an awareness to have), and it may be harder to live in a climate with less UV light.
The good news? Humans are highly adaptable in nature (we were designed that way), and you can still still thrive and adapt out of your "ancestral enviroment".
It might just be helpful to take things slower when moving to a practice like cold therapy - utilize more minerals and carb cycling days when attempting keto & optimizing local/seasonal food.
I actually just recorded an entire lesson with some great scientific resources on Haplotype in the 21 Day Leptin Reset Course (as a bonus in the introduction section)! If you own the course - log in to your portal & check it out!
