This week I have been getting tons of questions about sunlight - skincare & what the best options are for someone who really wants to optimize sun exposure safely.

And here's what most people (and skincare brands) don’t know:

Your skin isn’t just a barrier- it’s actually a solar receptor, and uses red light, infrared, UVA, and UVB to trigger hormonal responses like:

  • Melatonin (yes, during the day)
  • Vitamin D production
  • Cortisol and leptin regulation
  • Skin-based thyroid signaling (via α-MSH & nitric oxide)

Many conventional lotions - even those without SPF- can:

  • Scatter or absorb these wavelengths
  • Trap heat
  • Interfere with melanin and hormone signaling

Even raw oils like coconut or shea butter may slightly reduce UVB when applied before sun.
